While vacationing in Thailand, Phuket, Pattaya or Bangkok, tourists are often encouraged to visit nearby countries of Southeast Asia, such as: Singapore, Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur), Cambodia (Siem Reap), etc.

In this article, we will share with you our travel experience and self-planning of such routes.

Step one. Deciding on a trip.

The first thing it all starts with is making a decision. So, for example, after watching the movie "Trap" with Sean Connery, you decided to visit the capital of Malaysia, the city of Kuala Lumpur, and see with your own eyes the world famous Petronas Towers.

A very interesting fact is that for the construction of the towers in 1992-1998, only materials produced in Malaysia were to be used, so it was simply impossible to provide the builders with enough steel. Especially for the Twin Towers, a particularly strong yet flexible concrete was developed that could be produced domestically. The towers were built from it, as a result of which the skyscraper turned out to be twice as heavy as similar steel ones.

Step two. Booking and buying plane tickets to Kuala Lumpur.

From the experience gained over many years of working with tourists, personal flights and selling sightseeing tours, we can say for sure that it is best to fly from Thailand (Phuket, Bangkok, Pattaya, etc.) to Kuala Lumpur (value for money, safety) by an airline Air Asia. This is a Malaysian low-cost airline company, that is, you buy a “naked” but very cheap ticket, and you can pay extra for luggage, food on the plane, insurance and so on, or you can not overpay. Why, for example, pay extra money for 20-30 kg of luggage if you are flying for 2-3 days with a small bag or even a backpack, which can be easily taken in hand luggage? Everything on the Air Asia website is quite simple and straightforward. Choose where you are flying from and where, set dates. You get options. Usually the lowest prices are for early morning and late evening. The best price at which we were able to book round-trip tickets was 2,200 baht. Tickets were purchased 2 weeks before the trip.

Step three. Booking a hotel.

I usually use booking.com and sometimes agoda.com, but there are quite a few sites out there, so you can book a hotel through whichever one you like. If possible, choose a hotel closer to the center, since the center is the Petronas Towers area. This place is called KLCC (Kuala Lumpur City Center). The choice of hotels in Kuala Lumpur city is huge, from hostels to luxury hotels. Depending on the hotel's policy, you may be charged in advance, or upon arrival.

In the photo: Menara Tower

Step four. Time planning.

We can advise you on the following places to visit in Kuala Lumpur city:
- Petronas towers, twin towers or twin towers. If you want to get to the observation deck, which is located on the bridge between the buildings, then it is better to book tickets in advance, since many people want to get there, and the number of seats is limited 🙂
- TV tower "Minara" (Menara KL). In the dark, this tower looks simply amazing, thanks to its original lighting, for which it received the unofficial name "Garden of Light". This tower is located within walking distance of the Twin Towers, that is, in the center. Here you have the opportunity to visit only the observation deck (360 degrees) or add lunch / dinner to the observation deck in the restaurant on the floor below, which rotates on its axis (amazing 360 degrees view). There are no big problems with tickets here and places in the restaurant, but it is still better to book them in advance. Tables by the window are a little more expensive, but believe me, they are worth it, book them better. We liked the food very much, everything was delicious! We can safely say that it was one of the most "delicious" places in Kuala Lumpur.
- Batu Caves
- Aquarium
- Botanical garden with a park of birds, butterflies and an orchid garden
- Independence square with palaces and colonial buildings
- National Mosque
- Chinatown and Little India
- Old train station
- Royal Palace Museum Istanbul Negara
- Planetarium

Step five. Flight.

So it's time to fly. Since the flight is international, check-in for the flight opens 3 hours before departure. You can pre-register online and just walk up to the counter and check in. Arrive at the airport with some time, as in the morning there are often long queues, especially in Thailand, both for registration and passport control. The flight lasts 1-2 hours, depending on where you are flying from. You arrive in Kuala Lumpur at the KLIA 2 airport. Go through passport control and head to meet new sensations.

Step six. Transfer from the airport to the pre-booked hotel.

The currency in Malaysia is the Malaysian ringgit. The airport is of course the worst exchange rate you can find, so try to change only the amount you need to get to the center. And there are already enough exchangers in the center. How to get there? It's simple, you have 3 options to choose from:
1. Taxi. The trip will cost you about 50-100 ringgit, which, in my opinion, is very high and does not correspond to the "comfort" that will be received.
2. Train. You can take the fast train to the transport center in Kuala Lumpur (KL Sentral). The cost of the trip is 55 ringgit per person, the journey takes approximately 35 minutes. From KL Sentral you can get to your hotel by metro or taxi.
3. Bus. A bus to the same KL Sentral will cost you 12 ringgit per person. Travel time is 1-1.5 hours. Then you can change to one of the city metro lines or take a taxi.

Step seven. Check in hotel.

There are usually no problems with settling. English is well spoken everywhere in Kuala Lumpur.

Step Eight View the sights of Kuala Lumpur.

The actions, like the program in this step, are purely individual and depend on your plan, which you made in step 4

Step nine. Coming back.

Everything is simple here, since you have already done all this, only in the reverse order. First you need to get to KL Sentral (transport center in Kuala Lumpur). Next, you go to KLIA 2 airport and fly back to Thailand.

We really hope that the material was useful to you. If so, do not forget to share it on social networks, and if you have questions, ask them in the comments 🙂

Do you still doubt whether it is worth going to Kuala Lumpur on your own? Then we go to you! To explain why you shouldn't doubt) This is an amazing city - beautiful, colorful, unusual. We spent several days in it and responsibly declare: impressions, emotions and reviews of Kuala Lumpur evoke only the most positive, and only the most vivid memories. And very tasty)))
Reviews about Kuala Lumpur: 5 reasons to fly to the capital of Malaysia on your own

Reason 1: Kuala Lumpur is colorful!

Remember we talked about why? When we went to Kuala Lumpur on our own, we had the same feelings: the people there are so colorful and interesting that we ourselves wanted to take a picture with almost everyone we met! You walk around the city - and it is as if you are traveling around the planet: here is a Muslim district with hijabs and minarets, after a hundred meters - an Indian quarter with an unbearably captivating smell of curry, another five minutes walk - a Chinatown with dragons, red lanterns and wonderful crafts in small shops ... and a small Thai street with inherent prostitutes and perverts. But if you go to Kuala Lumpur on your own from Thailand, then this good will not surprise you))

When arriving in Kuala Lumpur on your own or on a guided tour, remember to abide by local laws. They say: not to visit the Bird Park is a malicious crime!

Reason 2: Kuala Lumpur is delicious!

Since Kuala Lumpur is a real seething cauldron of different peoples and cultures, the national cuisines of all these peoples are perfectly represented here. Remember the popular song: "Zuckerman turns on matzo, Gogi makes barbecue?" In this “communal apartment” the same thing: here the Malays cook nasi lemak, there the Thais pour it, here the Indians knead masala, there the Chinese serve some kind of hellish concoction from incomprehensible parts of the body of an incomprehensible animal ... Personally, when I say “Kuala Lumpur” a persistent spice of Indian cuisine rises in the mouth. How delicious it is! And it costs, by the way, very cheap. So if you are a connoisseur of real Indian cuisine, you don't have to risk your health and go to the land of the enlightened and lepers.

But we would not recommend going to the famous street-edalnya Jalan Alor. ...

Delicious and inexpensive Indian cuisine is one of the main reasons for me to go to Kuala Lumpur on my own!

Reason 3: Kuala Lumpur is beautiful!

When you go to Kuala Lumpur on your own, you will be amazed by the local architecture. There are colonial English buildings, and buildings in the Moroccan style, and modern high-tech made of glass and metal, and sparkling patterns in the style of different provinces of India, and mosques piercing the sky with minarets ...

I say - a boiling cauldron.

Reason 4: Kuala Lumpur is inexpensive!

This is primarily not even about the prices in Malaysia, but about the amount you will spend on the road. You can get to Kuala Lumpur on your own for very little money - of course, if you are already in Southeast Asia))) In general, the idea to write this article came to me after the Malay low-cost airline AirAsia opened direct (and low-cost) flights ... Cheap flights to Kuala Lumpur from other cities of Southeast Asia - Bangkok, Phuket, Hanoi, Denpasar, Singapore, etc. - have long been possible thanks to the same AirAsia and other airlines. Compare fares to Kuala Lumpur on the website of the world's best low-cost airline , as well as on an airline ticket aggregator that finds prices from different companies and booking systems.

The road to the airport, the flight, the trip to the city, and then everything is the same in the reverse order and all in order to spend some miserable 10 hours in a new place. Would you make such sacrifices? I went! In addition to the new country on my list, the plus of this trip (and the main reason why I made this very trip) was the price, I flew to Kuala Lumpur and back for only $ 65, that is, about 3800 (!) rubles. How I managed to "snatch" such cheap tickets to such a distant Malaysia, and what I managed to see in 10 hours in the capital of this country, I will tell you below!

Kuala Lumpur is a fairly large and modern city, with a population of just under 2 million. The airport is located 50 kilometers from the city, and you can get to the center either by taxi, or by train, or by bus. The most democratic is the last option (it cost 12 ringgit ~ 150 rubles at the exchange rate from mid-March 2017), but the journey takes about an hour (a train, for example, cost 35 ringgit and would take 35 minutes). The bus brought us to the KL Sentral station, from which we took the metro to the Petronas towers (KLCC metro station).

1. The beauty of the metro, of course, cannot be compared with the Moscow one, but it is quite functional and modern, all names are duplicated in English, easy navigation, ticket vending machines also have English localization, everything is simple and clear. The ticket price depends on the destination station (a trip to 5 stations in a straight line cost us 3.8 ringgit for two, if I remember everything correctly)

2. We sit down in the subway, we pass into the driver's cabin, we go!

3. In fact, there is no driver here, the metro is automatic, the beginning and end of the train look like this

4. You can imagine that you yourself are driving a train and feel like a train driver at least for a while

5. Petronas Towers are located in a business district full of skyscrapers, but a lot of greenery

6. Menara Kuala Lumpur looks out from behind the skyscrapers, it is also a city TV tower, you can go up there if you want (for money, of course)

7. Helo Malaysia

8. Interesting bus stop

9. And here is the Petronas Twin Towers, their height is 451.9 meters, they are among the ten tallest buildings in the world and are the tallest twin towers. They are connected by a bridge over which you can go from one tower to another. There are numerous offices and shops here, and the towers themselves belong to the Malaysian oil and gas company PETRONAS

To get to the top and enjoy the panorama of the city, you need to buy a ticket, it is not cheap, 85 ringgit per adult, but at the same time I advise you to buy it in advance on the towers website (you can also find more detailed information about opening hours and visiting sessions there). For example, when we came to the towers at 13 o'clock, there were no tickets for today! It's good that we took them over the Internet the day before.

10. Near the towers there is a park, where business center employees and numerous tourists while away their time

11.

12.

13.

14. In general, funny towers look like 2 giant ears of corn

15. And not far from skyscrapers you can find such houses

16. So, it's time for our visit to Petronas Twin Towers. The excursion includes an ascent to the observation deck of one of the towers, as well as to the bridge connecting them. Before getting up, they show an unusual presentation: the image is projected onto streams of steam (or something like that)

The level of security when visiting is very serious! First they inspect you and all your belongings, then bags, backpacks, etc. make you check in to the wardrobe, and during the ascents you are always accompanied by some incredible number of people. But it's not really annoying, to be honest.

17. Let's go up!

18. First, everyone is taken to the glass bridge between the towers, it is located either on the 41st or on the 42nd floor at an altitude of 170 meters

By the way, we were lucky, because in the group of climbers there were only 5 people (in others there were 20 people), sometimes it turned out to walk along an almost empty observation deck.

19. The views from the bridge are very steep

20. Construction and mosque As Siakirin (Masjid Asy-Syakirin)

21. It's a pity that everything is behind glass

22.

23. After the bridge we find ourselves on the 86th floor, there are no guided tours above (there are 88 floors in total)

24. From here, the views are even more mesmerizing

25. The city at a glance, a real metropolis

26.

27. In general, I like natural beauties more, but I can't help but admit that such cities look very impressive from above.

28.

29.

30. And this is such a mini-fun: on the observation deck there are several monitors with cameras and if you bring an entrance ticket to them, then towers with brief information about them begin to appear on the screen

The tour goes unnoticed, and although it is quite expensive, I do not regret a single ringgit spent on it!

31. Just an interesting skyscraper with palm trees and vegetation next to the towers

After the excursion to Petronas Twin Towers, we had very little time left, so we quickly took the metro to another location.

32. This is how turnstiles look in the Kuala Lumpur subway. I wonder how many people would buy tickets from us, taking into account that this turnstile can easily be stepped over and there are no control grandmothers nearby ...

33. One of the metro stations (from what I've seen, this type of station is observed in many Asian cities)

34. We arrived at Masjid Jamek, as it turned out, this is the oldest mosque in Kuala Lumpur. But we were not allowed into the territory (we were in shorts), we had to be content with a view from afar

35. Sometimes the city reminded me of some New York (although I haven’t been there yet, but the associations are just such)

36. To the south of the mosque begins Chinatown (aka Chinatown)

37. To be honest, I expected the area to be more colorful

38.

39.

40. The market is interesting, but it looked more like our Cherkizon at one time. They sell ordinary consumer goods, as elsewhere, nothing special

41.

42. But in one of the gateways a gorgeous street art was seen

43. This is not just a drawing on the wall, everything is voluminous! This is actually a part of a minibus with wheels, attached to the wall, and the figures of the children are cut out of cardboard or something similar.

44. This is the first time I see this! Looks very cool!

45. Malaysia is predominantly Muslim country, but Hindu temples are also present

46. \u200b\u200bAs always, they are very bright

That's it, we didn't have time to see anything else, it was time to go back to the airport, it's a pity, because we wanted to visit many more places. As it turned out, 10 hours in Kuala Lumpur is very little, you need to come here for at least a few days. But I still think the experiment with such an express trip was successful! I liked the city, if you haven't been here yet, I advise!

47. To the airport again got by bus from the station "KL Sentral". The airport itself is huge!

48. There are open areas (smoking rooms, in fact), from which you can watch the planes from a fairly close distance

49. Goodbye KL, it was cool!

Now back to the beginning of the post! How did I manage to fly to Kuala Lumpur and back for only $ 65 (and if we had not delayed everything until the last moment, then it would have been possible to fly 2 times cheaper)? Everything is very simple! I flew from Thailand :) In my blog I will talk in detail about a trip to this country, drop in at your leisure! Until then, thank you for your attention!
